First Election to the Preston City Council

The first election to the Preston City Council was held in 2002 after Preston was finally granted city status. None of the three largest parties – Labour, Conservative and Liberal Democrat, however, managed to win the absolute majority.

Here are the results of the first election to the Preston City Council in 2002:

In the Ashton ward which elected two councillors, the Conservative representatives Keith Sedgwick and William Tyson were selected.

In the Brookfield ward that elected 3 representatives, the Labour John Browne, Jonathan Saksena and Nerys Eaves decisively won over 3 Conservative candidates.

In the Cadley ward which had chosen 2 councillors, the Liberal Democrat Alan Hackett and Michael Onyon won most votes.

The College ward which also elected 2 representatives in the city council, the Conservative candidates Kathleen Cartwright and Jill Truby were selected.

The Deepdale ward elected 2 Independent councillors – Terry Cartwright and Joyce Cartwright.

The Fishwick ward that also elected 2 members of the city council was convinced by the two Labour candidates Harold Parker and Ismail Patel.

The Greyfriars ward that elected 3 representatives in the new Preston City Council gave its vote to the three Conservative candidates Joseph Hood, Geoff Driver and Peter Horton.

The Garrison ward also decided to support three Conservatives Jennifer Greenhalgh, Stuart Greenhalgh and Marie Milne.

Three Liberal Democrat candidates – William Chadwick, Margaret Marshall and Ronald Marshall were victorious in the Ingol ward.

The Larches ward was convinced the most by the Liberal Democrats Kathleen Derbyshire and Daniel Gallagher but the third seat went to the Labour Peter Ward.

The Lea Ward decided to sent all the three Liberal Democrat candidates – Christine Abram, Norman Abram and Pauline Brown as its representatives to the city council.

The Preston Rural East gave its vote to the Conservative Geoff Swarbrick and Neil Cartwright.

Conservatives

The Conservative Ken Hudson and Martin Landless won in the Preston Rural North.

The Moor Park ward was convinced by the Labour John Collins and Francesco de Molfetta.

The three Labour candidates – Patricia Woods, Andrew Campbell and Brian Rollo were chosen as representatives of the Ribbleton ward in the city council.

The Liberal Democrat Alan Valentine won in the Riversway ward, however, the second and third seat went to the Labour Elaine Abbot and Bhikhu Patel.

The St Georges Ward decided to give its voice to Labour candidates Yunis Khan and Siraz Natha.

The Labour Party candidates – Albert Richardson, Veronica Afrin and Ian Hall were victorious in the St Matthews ward.

The Town Centre ward was convinced by the Labour Ronald Atkins, Ken Cole and Musa Ahmed Jiwa.

The Sharoe Green ward voted for the Conservative Rowena Edmonson, Elizabeth Clarkson and Eric Fazackerley.

The Labour candidates Jean Al-Serraj and Matthew Brown won in the Tulketh ward.

The University ward was trusted its voice to the Labour Carl Crompton and John Swindells.

The Labour Party won the most seats in the first election to the Preston City Council with 25 elected candidates. The Conservatives won 19 seats, while the Liberal Democrat Party won 11 seats. Only 2 Independent candidates were elected as councillors.
